1812

Founded in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is a leading natural history museum dedicated to advancing research, education and public engagement in biodiversity and environmental science.

The increasing sophistication of the earth and life sciences, combined with a growing awareness of the great variety of life and landscape in the American wilderness waiting to be discovered, led a small group of naturalists to establish the Academy of Natural Sciences in the winter of 1812.

1817

On 25 April 1817 they were incorporated into the society under the title of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia by the legislature of Pennsylvania.

1828

The Academy opened its doors to the public in 1828.

1868

In 1868, before most of the world had heard of dinosaurs, the Academy became the first place to display a fully mounted dinosaur, the plant-eater Hadrosaurus foulkii from New Jersey.

1876

In 1876, its present home was built at 19th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, then the outskirts of town and now the heart of Philadelphia's cultural district.

1932

To capitalize on the educational potential of the dioramas, the Academy initiated classes for students in the School District of Philadelphia in 1932.

1948

In 1948, long before water pollution and environmental degradation became topics of public concern, the Academy established the Environmental Research Division.

2012

In 2012 the Academy celebrated its bicentennial with a yearlong exhibit that showcased highlights from its world-renowned collection of more than 18 million plant and animal specimens.
