1949

1949 Wisconsin Public Service became the first public utility to join in sponsorship of Trees for Tomorrow.

1950

The company had been selling natural gas to its customers since 1950, just after the first pipeline from the Hugoton Field in the Oil Patch of Oklahoma and Texas to the Upper Midwest was built.

1950 Natural gas pipeline arrived to the Wisconsin Public Service territory.

1951

In 1951, WPSC divested its bus lines in Wausau and Merrill, and they began independent operation under the name Wausau Transit Lines.

1952

1952: Standard Gas divests its entire stake in the company.

1952 Extension of service to the rural areas of Wisconsin Public Service territory was 98% complete.

In 1952, WPS installed computer equipment for the first time to perform claims and statistical functions.

1953

And it was first listed on the New York and Midwest stock exchanges in 1953.

1956

In 1956, WPS began financing major medical or catastrophic health care expenses that could seriously disrupt a family's income.

In 1956, the Department of Defense named WPS as the Wisconsin contractor for "Military Medicare," which later became known as CHAMPUS, (the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services), and which is now known as TRICARE.

1957

In 1957, the WPS sales force was established, including the first agency contract.

1960

In 1960, just two years after making a break from Blue Cross of Milwaukee, WPS met and achieved a significant sales objective by winning a contract to cover the surgical/medical portion of the State of Wisconsin employee benefits program.

WPS developed and marketed the Century Plan for those over age 65 beginning in 1960.

1961

In 1961, it made a move to control the means of distribution when it acquired two natural gas franchises, Merrill Gas Company and Oneida Gas Company.

1961 Wisconsin Public Service joined Madison Gas and Electric and Wisconsin Power and Light to form the Wisconsin Power Pool (WPP). The objective was to coordinate planning of future generating capacity.

1963

1963 By this time, 58% of Wisconsin Public Service customers were heating their homes with natural gas.

1966

With the implementation of the federal Medicare program in 1966, WPS became the Part B (physicians services) administrator for Medicare beneficiaries in Wisconsin, except for Milwaukee County, which was a separate Medicare service area.

1967

In 1967, the firm acquired the electrical distribution system for the municipality of Kewaunee, which had been owned by the city.

1969

With approval of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, in 1969 the company began constructing a seven-story office building on the banks of the Fox River.

1970

In 1970, the old Milwaukee mansion was vacated, and operations were consolidated at a new corporate headquarters in Green Bay.

In 1970, the company consolidated its corporate offices.

1970 81% of Wisconsin Public Service customers were heating their homes with natural gas.

After careful study and planning, Wisconsin Physicians Service created a new plan—the Health Maintenance Program—in 1970.

1971

In March 1971, Green County signed on as the first county wide customer.

1972

In October 1972, Wisconsin Public Service asked the state Public Service Commission for permission to sell the bus service in Green Bay, the only remaining bus system it was operating.

1973

Unfortunately, depleted natural gas wells, difficulty developing new sources of natural gas, and the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 led to restricted gas supplies across the nation.

1974

1974: The Kewaunee nuclear plant begins operation.

1975

In 1975, it posted revenues of $219.9 million, its best sales year ever.

1975 Columbia unit 1, jointly owned by Wisconsin Public Service and Wisconsin Power and Light, went online.

1976

1976 Wisconsin Public Service ended an era of selling appliances in all of its office locations.

Then, in 1976, WPS began service relationships with Professional Standards Review Organizations, or PSROs, which used statistical analysis of hospital discharge data to set guidelines on appropriate care for hospital patients with specified medical conditions.

1977

He is the fourth President and CEO since WPS was incorporated in 1977.

1978

Computer and accounting functions remained at the former East Lakeside Street facility in Madison until January 1978.

In November 1978, WPS increased computer capacity by 50% to 3 MB of memory with a new IBM 3031 CPU. The following year, another 3 MB of memory were added.

1978 Columbia unit 2, jointly owned by Wisconsin Public Service and Wisconsin Power and Light, went online.

1979

In October 1979, WPS developed and implemented a paperless claims processing system for the Medicare program.

Administrative and Technical Services, Inc. (adtec), established in 1979, provided a variety of office services.

1981

With the award of the CHAMPUS South-Central Region contract in 1981, WPS moved quickly to allocate resources for an additional facility at 1617 Sherman Avenue in Madison, Wis.

1982

1982 Wisconsin Public Service introduced a new bill, with more information to help customers concerned with energy conservation.

InsurTec, established in 1982.

1984

In 1984, also in a highly competitive procurement environment, WPS won a second major contract for the CHAMPUS Mid Atlantic Region, which included Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

1986

In October 1986, WPS installed an IBM 3084QX. The IBM 3084QX provided 64 MB of memory and was rated at a capability of 32 million instructions per second (MIPS).

Additionally, WPS established the Ray Koenig Foundation of WPS, Inc. in 1986.

1988

WPS broke ground in the spring of 1988 for a major new office building with over 153,000 square feet of floor space near our Monona location.

1989

The structure was completed and dedicated by a formal open house in September 1989.

Then, in 1989, the Office of CHAMPUS awarded WPS the contract for the Southeastern Region, which included Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and all foreign countries.

1990

In 1990, WPS was awarded a $20 million United States Department of Defense contract.

1992

In 1992, WPSC's contacts with the paper industry resulted in a joint venture seeking to find an efficient, ecologically sound way to generate electricity.

1993

In late 1993, the firm adopted a holding company structure, forming WPS Resources Corporation to oversee subsidiary operations, which at the time included WPSC, WPS Energy Services Inc., WPS Power Development Inc., Packerland Energy Services Inc., and WPS Communications Inc.

1993: WPS Resources Corp. is created to act as a holding company.

1993 Wisconsin Public Service was the first utility in the state to hire Customer Assistance Advisors.

1994

1994 Wisconsin Public Service formed a holding company, named WPS Resources Corporation.

1995

In June 1995, WPS partnered with ProVantage, a Milwaukee-area pharmacy benefits manager, to provide more competitive services.

In 1995, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission outlined a plan for restructuring of the state's electrical utility sector.

1996

In May 1996, a new partnership with Delta Dental of Wisconsin was created.

1996 Wisconsin Public Service began preparing for Y2K. 1996 Wisconsin Public Service introduced its SolarWise® for Schools program.

1997

The firm bolstered its regulated holdings with the purchase of the Upper Peninsula Energy Corporation in 1997.

Early in 1997, WPS changed course, using the InsurTec name to exclusively service the needs of self funded clients.

1998

WPS processed more than 21 million Part B claims in 1998.

1999

Jun 1999 Fourteen large wind turbines began making electricity for customers of Wisconsin Public Service.

2000

By 2000, however, it was clear that the state would not open its industry to retail competition in the near future.

In 2000, the firm began supplying customers in Maine.

In return for its transfer of assets, Wisconsin Public Service will receive a proportionate ownership share in ATC. Nov 2000 Wisconsin Public Service and Minnesota Power proposed to build an electric transmission line from Duluth, Minnesota, to Wausau, Wisconsin.

2001

The official merger date would be April 1, 2001.

2001 Steam generators at the Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant were replaced.

In 2001, Medco Health purchased ProVantage and became the official pharmacy partner of WPS.

In 2001, WPS began processing claims for the new TRICARE For Life program.

2002

The company secured $112.5 million in net income during 2002--a 45 percent increase over the previous year.

Sep 2002 To help meet growing electric demand, Wisconsin Public Service announced intentions to add a 500-megawatt coal-fired electric generator at the Weston Power Plant site.

2003

Also in 2003, TriWest HealthCare Alliance won the TRICARE West Region contract; WPS administered claims as TriWest's subcontractor.

2004

Dec 2004 WPS Resources Corporation (presented Wisconsin Governor James Doyle with a deed for approximately 12,000 acres of land donated and sold to the state by Wisconsin Public Service.

2005

Jul 2005 Wisconsin Public Service and Wisconsin Power and Light Company transferred ownership of the Kewaunee nuclear power plant to Dominion Energy Kewaunee, a subsidiary of Dominion Resources.

In 2005, WPS and Mutual of Omaha announced the acquisition of Mutual of Omaha's Medicare Part A division.

In 2005, WPS bought the assets of Prevea Health Plan, which was based in Green Bay, Wis.

2006

Apr 2006 WPS Resources completed the purchase of the Michigan gas operations of Aquila, Inc.

In 2006, WPS also acquired Mutual of Omaha's government claims business.

Then, in 2006, WPS renamed it Arise Health Plan and began offering Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Point-of-Service (POS) plans to customers in eastern Wisconsin.

2007

Feb 2007 WPS Resources Corporation completed its merger with Peoples Energy Corporation.

2008

The plant won the 2008 Plant of the Year Award from POWER magazine and Power Engineering's 2008 Best Coal-Fired Project award.

2010

In 2010, WPS was named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies® for the first time by the international Ethisphere® Institute.

2011

In December 2011, President Barack Obama established the first US NAP on Women, Peace and Security with Executive Order 13595, detailing the commitments of the Department of State, Department of Defense, US Agency for International Development, and other relevant federal agencies.

In 2011, WPS was awarded the Medicare Jurisdiction 8 contract, which provides Part B benefits for beneficiaries in Indiana and Michigan.

In 2011, WPS partnered with the Green Bay Packers on Operation Fan Mail.

2012

WPS was hit with big contract losses in 2012, when the TRICARE West Region contract and the Medicare Jurisdiction 6 contract were lost.

2013

2013 Wisconsin Public Service purchased Fox Energy Center, a natural gas fueled electric generating unit.

In 2013, WPS opened an on-site clinic at its Monona headquarters in partnership with QuadMed.

2014

In October 2014, work began on the Patient-Centered Community Care (PC3)/Choice contract for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The next year, three new subcontracts for TRICARE put WPS in the position of administering benefits for nearly half the eligible veterans in the United States Then, in 2014, WPS was awarded the contract renewal for TDEFIC, which extended work on TRICARE For Life for an additional six years.

2015

2015 Integrys Energy Group, Inc. and its operating companies were acquired and now do business as WEC Energy Group.

2016

In 2016, WPS announced a new initiative with Aspirus, Inc. and created a new holding company, Arise Health Ventures.

2017

Many countries have directed the implementation of UNSCR 1325 through national action plans (NAPs). By November 2017, more than 70 countries had adopted NAPs to ensure the meaningful participation of women in international peace and security decision-making.

Aspirus Arise began selling health plans in central and northern Wisconsin in 2017.

2018

The US Women, Peace, and Security Act (WPS Act) celebrated its first anniversary on October 6, 2018.

A big contract win happened in 2018 when work began on the TRICARE East Region (in blue on map) contract, which meant WPS was processing claims for about 60% of the country's active-duty military and their families.

In 2018, WPS was again awarded the Medicare Jurisdiction 8 contract, this time for Part A and Part B benefits administration.

2019

To avoid any potential conflict of interest with federal contracts, however, WPS sold its stake in Arise Health Ventures to Aspirus in 2019.

2020

In March 2020, more than 93% of WPS employees began working remotely.

Amid social unrest around the country following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May of 2020, WPS moved forward with efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion that year.

In May 2020, the Marketing team won two silver Telly Awards for a veteran-focused video produced for WPS Military and Veterans Health.

2021

In March 2021, WPS signed a Wind-Down Agreement with TriWest after months of negotiations.

WPS was awarded the TRICARE Medicare Eligible Program (TMEP) contract in April 2021.

In August 2021, WPS was chosen as one of the Achievers 50 Most Engaged Workplaces®. The award recognizes employers that put people first.
