Can I become a lawyer online?
Yes, you can become a lawyer online. There are a handful of law schools that have been permitted to have exclusively online programs. However, most of these are hybrid programs that require you to be on campus sometimes. The key is researching and finding a program that prepares you to pass the Bar Exam and helps teach you all of the skills needed to be a lawyer.
Historically, the American Bar Association (ABA) wouldn't sanction a 100% online law program. However, the COVID-19 pandemic may have permanently shifted the ABA's thinking on this matter. During 2020 and 2021, the ABA gave some law schools waivers to offer predominantly online JD programs.
The law schools that were permitted to conduct their program exclusively online require that applicants have a bachelor's degree and a competitive score on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). If a program claims otherwise they are most likely a scam and you should not apply. This is why it's important to do your research when it comes to deciding on an online program.
Most of these online law degree programs combine online courses and on-campus instruction for working professionals.
