Do you need a Ph.D. to be a biologist?

Three potential careers for a biologist that do not require a Ph.D. include a microbiologist, a genetic counselor, and a biochemist. All three of these roles are common roles for people who want to work in biology and who have their bachelor's or master's degree in biology.

A microbiologist studies the smallest life forms on the planet, like bacteria and fungi, in order to understand how these organisms live, grow, and interact with their environments. Duties for microbiologists typically include both lab and fieldwork, collecting samples, and performing research.

Genetic counselors work with clients and patients to make assessments about the makeup of their genetics and provide them with the statistical risk of passing genetic illnesses or disabilities to future children.

They often counsel families who are expecting children or are in the process of family planning. Duties may also include counseling adults who have concerns about developing genetic disorders later in life.

A biochemist aids in labs in biotechnology companies and biomedical research firms. Job functions include research and performing tests used for studies as well as developing new products. A biochemist may also be responsible for proposal and grant writing to secure necessary development and research projects funds.
