This question is about librarian jobs.
To get a job as a librarian, you'll need the right combination of educational credentials and work experience. To become a librarian starts with a bachelor's degree; however, many librarians earn a master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).
Having an ALA-accredited master's degree is necessary for most librarian positions in most public, academic, and special libraries. School librarians, however, may not need to have an MLS but typically must meet state teaching requirements. It depends largely on the state and the school itself.
While working on your degree, consider finding a part-time library or museum position, volunteer opportunity, or internship. While this step isn't necessary, it's an excellent way to gain valuable work experience and network with other people in the field, which will make it easier to land an entry-level position once you graduate.
Finally, some states, like New York, require testing and certification after degree completion in addition to the MLS degree. In contrast, other states do not or may only require certain types of librarians to be certified, such as K-12 librarians.
There are various reasons why certification may be required, such as keeping public funding or working with children.
