This question is about international student counselor resumes.
You write a resume for a student visa using a few guidelines focused on format and content. Since many countries have their own standards and best practices when it comes to writing a resume, you'll need to do your research.
The resume format acceptable in the USA by organizations and staffing agencies varies from the format used in many other countries worldwide. Therefore, it becomes of utmost importance for international students to understand the correct format and craft a resume accordingly.
Include sections in the following order on your student visa resume:
Personal Information
Summary Statement
Education Details
Experience Details
Skills/Areas of Expertise
Licenses (optional)
Awards/Honors (optional)
Professional Memberships (optional)
Interests/Hobbies (optional)
Additional Information (optional)
References (recommend)
If you're creating a student visa resume for America, the personal information section may look different than in other countries.
In the U.S., for example, only your name, email, and phone number (link to a professional website, LinkedIn) should be listed under contact information. In other countries, like Singapore, Germany, and Asia, photos are encouraged in a resume's personal details section.
The summary statement is not always used. It depends on the industry/field and country. A summary statement can be a great way to introduce yourself as a student and touch on your skills and career goals.
For example, "A European language student currently in the final stages of a linguistics degree and with a successful study record and examination passes to date.
Bilingual in English and Spanish. Motivated, creative, personable, and open to any local employment in the United States where I can put my language skills and people's experience to good use and make a contribution."
International students looking for work after completion of studies should pay extra attention to how they showcase their educational qualifications. With limited to no work experience, the education section is the place to showcase your credentials and unique skills.
Include the following education information on your student visa resume for each degree earned;
Start Year of Program
End Year of Program
Majors and Minors
Coursework & GPA (if high)
Projects
Presentations / Workshops / Conferences / Symposiums
Student Societies
Extra-Curricular Activities
Finally, be sure to include a skills section that aligns with the job description that you're applying for. The key to listing skills on a student visa resume is to also incorporate these skills throughout your resume when highlighting your education and work experience.
If you don't have much work experience, that is okay. You can include any internships or freelance related to the job you're applying for.
