How hard is it to become a JAG?
It is quite difficult to become a military JAG officer.The process involves several steps and involves both civilian and military training in order to gain entrance into the JAG Corps.
There are multiple paths to becoming a military JAG officer. All avenues require that candidates obtain a military security clearance; this involves an investigation into a candidate's personal life and past. Associations with foreign countries, financial records, and psychological health are all areas that may be investigated.
All JAG candidates must have a bachelor's degree. There are no requirements concerning the type of degree, but without one, a candidate will not be able to apply to law school. Candidates must score high enough on the LSAT to gain acceptance to an accredited law school. Only about 50% of test-takers achieve an average score of 150.
Prospective JAG candidates must graduate and become licensed to practice law. Once candidates have become licensed to practice civilian law, they are ready to fulfill the military requirements of a JAG lawyer.
Military requirements involve both academic and physical training that varies depending on the branch of the military. All branches of the military have their own training requirements, but most involve officer candidate training that lasts six to eight weeks, plus JAG-specific legal training for ten weeks to two months.
