How hard is it to become a plumber?
Becoming a plumber is a lengthy process that involves multiple steps. Aspiring plumbers must amass hours of experience as well as pass state-mandated tests.
Some of the difficulties related to entering the field of plumbing are related to finding a master plumber who will take you on as an apprentice. Oftentimes, apprenticeships are overseen by the plumbers union. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass an aptitude test.
Apprenticeships last anywhere from four to five years, during which time you will learn all aspects of the plumbing profession from a master plumber. Some states require that, during your internship, you take coursework and in-person classes.
During this apprenticeship, you will be paid and work a schedule typical of a professional plumber. You may even be assigned to complete tasks or jobs alone as you gain more experience.
Finally, apprentices take their licensing exam. This exam consists of both plumbing skills and methods as well as state laws and codes.
