How hard is it to become a product designer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 10, 2021

It's moderately hard to become a product designer. It requires a lot of hard work and persistence. But if you care about helping people achieve their goals, and you have a sound mind for putting together the pieces of a puzzle, then you have everything you need to begin.

First, familiarize yourself with UI and UX drawing programs (e.g., Sketch, InVision). This skill means knowing where the buttons are and how to use them. Be able to place, pull, resize, export, crop, and erase. An excellent place to learn the basics includes YouTube tutorials and online programs courses.

Next, develop a systematic way of working through a design problem. Some good places to learn how to design using a reliable process regularly include Udacity, the legendary Norman Nielsen Group courses, and the online course called Product Design Pro.

Finally, build your work portfolio and seek out projects that allow you to gain different types of hands-on experience. At a minimum, have at least three solid projects that you have worked on from conception to completion.
