How hard is it to become a surgical tech?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

It is not hard to become a surgical tech. Compared to most medical field positions, it is not hard, but it is not a grab-and-go job either.

Surgical tech programs often take between 12 and 24 months to complete. There are certificate and degree programs. Both programs are widely accepted by employers and will not cause differentiation in pay.

A surgical tech must pass the certified surgical technologist exam. Most importantly, make sure your program is accredited. Two of the accreditations that are accepted are by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Surgical techs are becoming a job that is more in need than there is the supply of individuals to fill it. This is similar across the nation in hospitals and outpatient facilities.

Becoming a surgical tech is a demanding job that involves medical equipment, human anatomy, and a busy, fast-paced environment. Given the number of employees being sought after, this is likely not a job that is heavily pursued.
