How long are MD Ph.D. programs?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

MD Ph.D. programs are eight years in length on average. If you choose to attend an MD Ph.D. program instead of just an MD program, you are basically doubling the amount of time you need to attend traditional medical school.

The long amount of time is due to the fact that you must complete training for both an MD and Ph.D. program. MD Ph.D. programs provide training for the dual degree by integrating research and clinical training experiences where students learn to conduct hypothesis driven research in a mentored environment.

There are over 100 accredited programs at U.S. medical schools, and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences partially supports approximately 45 programs, known as Medical Scientist Training Programs (MSTPs).
