How long does it take to become a field engineer?

It takes about six years to become a field engineer. Most field engineers will use the traditional route when obtaining their experience and education: a four-year bachelor's degree and two years of additional experience. However, some have gotten their associate's degree with four to six years of additional experience.

For those who do not have the traditional education requirement or prefer a non-traditional route, certifications and relevant experience can take anywhere from 5 to 8 years to fully become a field engineer. This path is labor-intensive and does require mentorship and the successful completion of certain certifications and training.
