How long does it take to become a packaging engineer?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

It generally takes four or five years to earn a bachelor's degree and gain an entry-level role as a packaging engineer. In contrast, a master's degree is not required to be a packaging engineer, although many professionals pursue advanced degrees, particularly if they plan to specialize in a specific area or do research.

Packaging engineering programs may be offered through an engineering school or a school of packaging within a university. If no major is offered in packaging engineering, students can choose a related discipline, such as mechanical, industrial, electrical, chemical, materials, or systems engineering.

As a person is completing their college education, it is important to find an internship to learn more about the field and gain experience. Because there are a variety of industries that need packaging engineers, an internship will be useful to help a person discover what industry they want to work in.

It is also helpful to note that packaging engineers are not expected to or required to obtain a Professional Engineering (PE) license, as one does not currently exist. While many other engineers need a PE license, this is not needed to work as a packaging engineer.
