How long does it take to become a veterinary assistant?
It takes between 3 to 12 months to become a veterinary assistant. Most places require vet assistants to have earned their Veterinary Assistant certificate.
To become an AVA, prospective veterinary assistants must graduate from a 3-to-12-month NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant training program and then sit and pass the AVA examination.
While passing the exam is not necessary to work, becoming a veterinary assistant can improve your chances of landing a veterinary assistant position with no prior experience.
A typical veterinary assistant certificate program lasts 6 to 9 months and includes 150 didactic hours (lectures, labs, etc.) and 100 hours of a clinical internship outside the school facility working on unfamiliar animals.
There are also online options that allow candidates to move through the material at their own pace. When choosing a program, it is important to look for a well-rounded program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities.
Either program you choose will end with an exam consisting of 100 questions completed in 150 minutes. Students passing with 75% or better are considered Approved Veterinary Assistants.
