How long does it take to become an environmental engineer?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

It takes four or more years to become an environmental engineer. To become an environmental engineer, a four-year bachelor's degree is typically required. It is possible to secure an entry-level position in environmental engineering with only an associate degree, but this is rare.

Just under 5% of environmental engineers have only an associate's degree. Over 90% have a bachelor's or advanced degree. Roughly 20% of environmental engineers have a master's or doctoral degree.

Some of the most common degree areas for environmental engineers are engineering, chemistry, and biology.

Interestingly enough, environmental engineering is not the top engineering degree held by environmental engineers. And, it is not the second either. Here is the breakdown:

  • Civil engineering: 19.3%

  • Chemical engineering: 18.8%

  • Environmental engineering: 7.1%

  • Environmental science: 8.7%

  • Mechanical engineering: 5.1%

  • Chemistry: 4.3%

  • Biology: 3.8%

Earning an engineering bachelor's degree typically takes four or more years to complete. A master's or bachelor's track for an engineering specialization can take anywhere from five years up to nine or more years to complete.
