How long does it take to get a CDL?
A CDL license can take anywhere from three weeks to six months to get. The median time is three months.
A person can obtain a truck driving license in as little as three weeks (e.g., freight truckers, local truck drivers) or as much as six months for more specialized truck drivers (e.g., refrigerated freight haulers, tankers).
It largely depends on the type of truck driver. Most need to have an operator license, good vision and pass a knowledge and skill test, as well as background and drug test.

Individuals are required to first take a written test for a permit. The permit allows the applicant to practice driving commercial vehicles. Next, an applicant can submit an application and pay $40 for a driving test.
There are variations to this procedure depending on the state. For example, some states do not require CDL applicants to take special courses, but they are recommended.
