How many years does it take to become a design engineer?
It takes 9 to 11 years to become a design engineer. This includes at least four years of formal schooling and several years of work experience.
First, you must complete a bachelor's degree majoring in mechanical engineering or industrial design, or for some, a double degree. Other design engineers complete a master's of industrial design or master's degree of engineering.
Whether you complete your bachelor's or master's degree will determine how many years of work experience you need. For example, someone with a bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) and at least seven years of experience, a master's degree in engineering, and five years' experience.
Design engineering candidates will need to accumulate work experience to showcase their value as design engineers to their resumes. Experience can be gained through internships or volunteer opportunities.
Finally, there are many certifications out there to further demonstrate your proficiency in the field. You can earn a CAD certification, engineering management certification, or one that's relevant to your engineering field.
