How many years will it take to become a physical therapist?
It will take between 6 to 7 years to become a physical therapist. First, you must earn a bachelor's degree (4-years), followed by a doctorate of physical therapy (2 to 3 years).
If you're a non-traditional student thinking about a career change, some DMT programs will take individuals with bachelor's degrees in unrelated fields (e.g., psychology, economics). Going this route usually takes three years to complete the program.
Once you earn your degree and pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), which is given by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), you're ready to begin your career as a licensed physical therapist.
Once you are working in your role as a physical therapist, you must continue your education. Your PT license only lasts for 1 to 2 years in every state before you need to renew it.
When the renewal date comes, depending on the state you are in, you will need to record the continuing paper-type education courses you have taken during the past 12 to 24 months.
