How should a graduate student write a resume?

Arguably, one of the most important sections of your resume is the profile summary. This section should be two to three sentences in length. Highlight your overall qualifications, and address the specific university and its program to which you are applying.

For example, "Detail-oriented English Major seeking to leverage excellent written and verbal communication skills to succeed as an Intern at XYZ company. Excel at working on teams with over three years of experience as President of the debate team."

The skills section should be the third section you include in your resume. It is important to include both hard (technical) skills and soft (interpersonal) skills. As you are applying to a graduate degree program, make sure to include skills that would be beneficial for a student to have.

The fourth section of your graduate student resume should highlight your previous undergraduate or graduate educational experience. Tailor the coursework listed within the education section so that it is more focused on relevant courses. If you have a good GPA, you may include this as well. Also, decrease emphasis on undergraduate courses.

If you have any honors and awards, consider listing them on your resume. Finally, add a section for research projects, extracurriculars, conferences, or publications. If you have an online blog or social media relevant to the position you're applying for, then include a link to that, as well as any work portfolios you may have.
