How to become a data analyst without a degree

A tech-based boot camp gives you plenty of hands-on experience while you learn the technical skills you need to become a data analyst. It's also a chance to start building your work portfolio while you are training.

The types of skills you need to get a job as a data analyst include ones in statistics, R or python programming, Structured Query Language (SQL), data visualization, and data cleaning and preparation.

You also need non-technical skills, such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Before you apply for a job, make sure you practice on projects with real data. These can be self-imposed projects, or as was mentioned earlier, projects you are assigned in a tech-based boot camp. The important part is that you are using data from real-world sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), NASA, or elsewhere.

Here are some general tips for building your data analyst work portfolio:

• Gather data from a variety of sources

• Normalize and clean raw data

• Create visual presentations with data through maps, charts, graphs, and other visual aids

• Make assertions with your data that can be acted upon

If you've had the opportunity to work on a group data project, definitely include it in your work portfolio, as it displays your ability to work on a team.

Another important aspect of the data project is presenting your findings. Practice presenting to instructors, peers, or whoever you can, because this is a crucial part of a data analyst's job.
