How to become an art teacher without a degree

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

You cannot become an art teacher without a degree, and you must obtain a state license. Professional artists may qualify for art teacher positions based on experience, but they will need to be licensed in the state they wish to work in. The steps to becoming an art teacher in any state are relatively similar.

Usually, the first step requires an approved education through a teacher preparation program. Art teachers usually work on earning their teaching certification while they are in the latter stages of the teacher prep program. The state will issue the actual license only when the necessary requirements have been met.

Although each state's process will vary, the educational requirements are usually a minimum of a bachelor's degree, preferably in an art-related degree program or in education. The teacher preparation component is oftentimes interwoven into the degree program.

There are separate teaching programs that may be taken separately from a degree if you choose. These can be part of a master's degree or Ph.D. for students who are returning to school. There may also be instances where some schools have a fifth-year bachelor's program adding an additional year for teacher preparation coursework.

After you graduate, you will have to take your state exams. These exams are a way to show that you are competent in all areas and that you will be an effective teacher. Every state has its own requirements, but the tests usually consist of basic skills in reading, writing, and math.

A second test that most states require teachers to take is a content knowledge exam in their area of specialization. For an art teacher, this test will likely cover:

  • Art making

  • Art use

  • Art history

  • Art theory

The final step in the certification process is to apply for your state license. There will be a checklist of paperwork and items that you will need to send in along with your application. The typical items include:

  • An official copy of your degree

  • Proof of student teaching

  • Fingerprint

  • Background check

  • Application fee
