How to get a contractor's license with no experience

If you do this without any contracting experience, it is like you are borrowing the licenses of professional contractors to work on a specific project. This means that the RME or RMO takes full liability for any legal necessities pertaining to the job because they have a license.

Attempt to obtain a grandfathered contractor license

Certain states allow experienced contractors to give their licenses to new contractors after they retire. In this instance, you will still have to pass a state licensing exam for the specific trade to be eligible for being given the license.

This is ideal when it is coming from a previously established family business; however, you do not have to be a family member of the retiring licensed contractor in order to obtain their license.

Try to obtain a waiver from the licensing board

This is an option; however, it is rare. If you are able to convince your state licensing board to waive experience requirements, you may be able to obtain a contractor's license. It is extremely rare that someone with no experience is able to do this, but it is slightly more possible for someone with minimal experience to do this.
