This question is about what a certified lifeguard does.
The basic qualifications for a lifeguard are a lifeguard certification. The requirements for certification will vary by state, but the general criteria are:
At least 15 years of age (depending on the state)
Swim at least 100 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke without resting
Be able to perform a feet-first dive and retrieve a 10 lb brick and bring it back to the surface
Tread water without using your arms for at least 1 minute
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, and 40 seconds (usually involves swimming 20 yards)
In addition to the physical requirements, candidates will have to attend courses such as:
American Aquatics Safety Training 2-Year Lifeguard certification
American Aquatics Safety Training 2-Year First Aid and CPR/AED certification
These classes are in person and usually last about 26 hours (total). The students will learn topics like:
Injury avoidance
Facility safety
Patron monitoring
Rescue skills
Victim analysis
Emergency treatment
CPR
AED
Head, neck, and back injuries
