This question is about what a librarian does.

What are the qualifications of a librarian?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

The qualifications of a librarian are a master's degree in library sciences or a related field and experience in a library setting. Most master's degree programs in library science can be completed in one to two years.

A master's degree in library sciences is the standard for librarians; however, some can get only bachelor's degrees coupled with teaching certification to qualify for certain librarian roles. Certain librarian roles require a degree from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association, otherwise known as the ALA.

Library-related internship programs are also a strong asset to have on a resume when applying for library jobs. Some master's programs offer internship programs within their university or can facilitate programs with outside sources. Though an internship is highly beneficial and recommended, it is not a requirement.
