What are the qualifications of a pilot?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

The qualifications of a pilot are graduation from flight school, flight hours, and skills and experience in professional flying. Qualifications also vary for commercial and private pilots depending on their employer and are very different for fighter jet pilots in the military.

Here is the standard process to gain the necessary qualifications to become a commercial or private pilot:

To earn a pilot's license, you must attend flight school. These institutions consist of difficult classes that are similar to most forms of education, with textbooks, homework, studying, and exams.

This portion of flight school is known as ground labs, meaning courses you take on the ground before gaining flight experience. You will learn the basic procedures for operating and flying a plane, as well as the laws that govern the aviation world.

Your introduction to actual flight will still be regulated to the ground at first. You need to pass many flight simulator tests before you can get up into the air.

Next up, you have to obtain flight hours with an instructor. To become a licensed pilot, you need to have 150 hours of instructed flight time.

After you graduate from flight school and have obtained the necessary flight hours, you can apply for pilot positions.

Here are some skills that are necessary for all pilots:

  • A good understanding of math and physics.

  • An ability to understand highly technical information.

  • Excellent spatial awareness and skilled coordination.

  • Strong communication skills utilized when talking to co-pilots, flight crews, and air traffic controllers.

  • Team player, flying in most cases, is a collaborative profession.

  • The ability to think quickly and make decisions in difficult situations.

  • The ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.

  • Leadership experience, qualities, and skills.

Now we'll take a look at how to obtain the necessary qualifications to become a fighter pilot in the military:

It is an extremely difficult path to become a fighter pilot. The journey and position itself take an immense amount of motivation, dedication, mental fortitude, resilience, and a "never give up" attitude.

On average, each year, only three candidates become fighter pilots out of over 1000 applicants. After getting a bachelor's degree, it only takes around two years to become a fighter pilot, but these two years are grueling with intense training and tests.

The first step in becoming a fighter pilot is obtaining a bachelor's degree. A degree that is related to aviation or military service is recommended.

Next, you have to join the AirForce, Navy, or Marine Corps as a commissioned officer and pass qualifying officer tests. The Air Force requires all candidates to pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test. Navy and Marine pilots must take and pass the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Selection Test Battery.

You must also meet the physical fitness requirements. Fighter pilots must have 20/20 vision, exceptional hearing, and be able to withstand the G-forces imposed on the body when flying in a jet. G-force tests are simulated flight tests, and you must get through them without passing out or vomiting.

Now you have to undergo flight training. Air Force pilots do pre-flight and academic training, after which they must complete 22 weeks of primary training. Navy pilots take a six-week indoctrination course at the Naval Aviation Schools Command in Florida.

Marine pilots must attend six weeks of Aviation Preflight Indoctrination in Florida, 22 weeks of Primary Flight Training in Florida, Texas, or Oklahoma, and 14 to 49 weeks of Advanced Flight Training in Florida, Mississippi, or Texas.

If you are able to be one of the few people that pass these training programs, you are then assigned a fighter jet.
