The three most important skills in a UX designer are research and strategy, user interface and design, and curiosity and creativity. As a UX designer, you must wear many hats to ensure ultimate user satisfaction. To accomplish this, a UX designer must cultivate a wheelhouse of both applied and soft skills to excel.
To know your product potential means understanding your customer and the larger market. Research is a fundamental part of the process of determining users' needs. This includes things such as how they'll interact with and respond to the finished product.
For this reason, UX designers should have specific technical skills that include being well-versed in research methods. This includes understanding how to design a study, collect qualitative and quantitative data collection, conduct research, analyze findings, and uncover insights.
UX designers should also have technical design skills, including a strong understanding of visual interface elements like layout, typography, graphics, images, and animated motion, which are key to the user's overall experience.
They must be able to see not only the bigger picture but also all of the levels of interaction leading up to it. Consistent with this, UX describes all interactions a customer has with a company, its services, and its products.
A UX designer must be aware of all of these potential interactions while always keeping the customer experience in mind. They must be able to plan ahead in how all of these levels of interaction may go and troubleshoot when things go wrong.
To accomplish this requires thinking outside the box. Creative thinking is synonymous with curiosity, which leads to asking insightful questions, active listening, and engaging more deeply with problems.
