By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You need a master's degree in counseling to be a child therapist. First, you should seek to obtain your bachelor's degree in psychology, behavioral science, or social science. Some universities offer majors in child therapy, while others do not.

During your master's degree program, you need to conduct research and develop a thesis. This should concern some area of child psychology or another child-related issue. During this time, you are also required to gain supervised counseling experience.

After you obtain your master's degree, you then should get licensed or certified. The requirements and rules for certification vary state by state. State boards of health determine the specific qualifications to gain certification or licensure.
