This question is about what a dermatologist does.

What degree do you need to be a dermatologist assistant?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

You need a master's degree from an accredited physician assistant program to be a dermatologist assistant. These programs are very competitive, and applicants to the program typically need a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or anatomy and physiology. Many programs also require several years of healthcare experience.

The physician assistant program typically lasts about three years and includes a mix of coursework and clinical rotations. Course topics include:

  • Pharmacology

  • Physical diagnosis

  • Microbiology

  • Anatomy

  • Behavioral science

Students will also have to complete about 2,000 hours of clinical fieldwork in several rotations, including emergency medicine, internal medicine, and surgery.

All states require that dermatologist assistants become licensed before they can work with patients. You must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Those who pass can use the designation "Physician-Assistant Certified" and can apply for their state license. Certification requires 100 hours of continuing education every two years and a recertification exam every ten years.
