This question is about family physician education.
You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) to be a family physician. The first step in the process is to obtain your undergraduate degree. In most cases, students choose areas of study such as biology, chemistry, or another science-related field.
After receiving your undergraduate degree, you will need to go on to medical school. The steps for this should take place as early as possible during your undergraduate studies. Begin by researching specific medical school admissions requirements, timing, and other application factors.
You will have to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) in order to be able to apply (and be accepted) to medical school. It is important to start preparing for this test early. The test is computer-based and consists of multiple choice questions that assess critical thinking, writing skills, and basic science knowledge.
If you are accepted into medical school, you can expect to spend nearly 9,000 hours in lectures, clinical study, and labjs learning about direct patient care. You will take 2 step exams and complete core clerkships. Passing the classes, exams, and clerkships are required before earning your MD or DO.
In addition to the degree requirements, family physicians will have to complete a residency program. Family physicians are trained in one of the more than 600 family medicane residency programs that are accredited by the Accrediation Counsil for Grduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The first year of residency is called the internship year and is when the final step exam will be taken. Residency programs include 3 years of training in which the resident must meet the program requirements for residency education in family medicine and certification by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM).
When their residency is coming to an end, family physicians can apply for licensure from their state medical boards. Each state's requirements will vary, so it is important to research your state's specific requirements. All states require that physicians pass all 3 steps in the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE).
