What degree do you need to be a history teacher?
You need a bachelor's degree in history to be a history teacher. A bachelor's degree in geography or another liberal arts subject is also acceptable. In addition, there are several other steps you must take to become a history teacher.
You also need to graduate from an accredited single-subject secondary school teacher preparation program. Some universities and colleges offer this as part of their bachelor's degree programs, while others offer it as a post-bachelor degree program.
Next, you have to take part in a student teaching program. This is a requirement in nearly all states to receive your state's licensure as a teacher. Again, certain universities and colleges can facilitate this, while others don't.
Then you have to apply for your teaching license in your state. If you want to teach in the public school system, you must complete this step. While many private schools don't require this, most still check to see if you have it.
Lastly, if you want the ability to teach history in multiple states, you must then apply for national certification. This certification is offered through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. To do this, you must pass a test that contains questions on basic history, geography, economics, and the government.
