What degree do you need to be a hydrologist?
You need a bachelor's degree in environmental science to be a hydrologist.
Most undergraduate programs don't have a hydrology focus, so the prospective hydrologist typically gets an undergraduate degree in some type of environmental science. This will just get them into entry-level positions within the field. It is expected that they further their education by selecting a graduate program that is specific to hydrology.
Most states also require a hydrologist to obtain a license. It is also expected that a hydrologist demonstrates academic credentials and work experience.
Some places also require certification. Although not always required, the certification is helpful. The American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) is a well-respected place to obtain certification, which requires passing a two-part exam and possessing one of the following:
Bachelor's degree and five years of experience
Master's degree and four years of experience
Doctorate degree and three years of experience.
A degree is essential to becoming a hydrologist. Hydrologists deal with water and soil, determining the properties there within. They take records of volume, velocity, pH, pollution, and more.
They then used advanced technology to analyze results and determine the future of an area and how to improve it. Without a depth of education and experience, these tasks would be extremely difficult.
