This question is about lactation consultant education.

What degree do you need to be a lactation consultant?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing and a lactation certification to become a lactation consultant. It may even be beneficial, especially to enhance advancement opportunities, for you to pursue a master's degree in nursing or a related field.

After completing your education, you will need to pass a board certification exam through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). The IBLCE requires you to take a minimum of 90 hours of lactation-specific courses, which can be completed in your studies or through practicum hours.

Many lactation consultants start out in entry-level nursing positions to gain the experience necessary for the IBLCE exam. Seeking work in birth centers or maternity departments can be extremely helpful not only for the exam but to allow you to be more prepared for your future as a lactation consultant.

Once you have obtained certification, you may begin working as a certified lactation consultant. However, there are still many opportunities for career development. Additional certifications, such as becoming a certified lactation educator, can help to expand your career opportunities should you pursue them.
