What degree do you need to be a plumber?
You need to complete a technical plumbing program to be a plumber. Plumbing programs or apprenticeships usually last around four to five years and include classroom study and paid on-the-job experience.
The classroom portion of a typical plumbing program consists of 500 to 750 hours of classwork. Some of the topics studied are:
OSHA safety training
Reading blueprints
Mathematics
Plumbing basics
Advance plumbing
Specialty plumbing
Most programs also have a requirement of 7,500 - 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. Some of the skills learned while completing the on-the-job training are:
Installing piping and fixtures
Cutting holes in floors, studs, walls, etc.
How to use soldering irons, saws, and other power tools
How to interact with clients
Following building codes
After all, training is complete; you must take a competency exam in order to be licensed and move from being an apprentice plumber to being a journeyman plumber.
