What degree do you need to be a science teacher?
You need a bachelor's degree in science to be a science teacher. There are several different paths that you may consider when pursuing a career teaching science that ranges from general science to studying a specialized area within the science field.
Science teachers have the option to obtain a degree in general science and teach students at lower grade levels (K-8) or specialize in a branch of science and teach students in the upper-grade levels (9-12).
Chemistry, biology, earth science, and physics represent several of the specialized areas that you may earn a bachelor's degree in and apply as one of the qualifications necessary to become a science teacher.
In addition to earning a bachelor's degree in a science-related area of study, you must also minor in education. An education minor will prepare you for applying your content knowledge in the classroom.
Teaching candidates are required to pass state exams known as Praxis, in which both content knowledge and educational best practices are assessed. It is only after you have earned your bachelor's degree and passed the state exams that you will be issued a license and be able to teach science in your state.
