What degree do you need to be an art director?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

You need a bachelor's degree to be an art director. Art directors need at least a bachelor's degree in an art or design subject and previous work experience. Depending on the industry, art directors can come from a range of diverse backgrounds such as graphic design, fine art, editoring, or photography, or in another art field.

An art director is a professional who oversees a team of creatives, such as designers, within an organization. Art directors typically manage the overall design of a project and direct the individuals who work on various creative aspects of the project. An art director's primary focus is the style and aesthetic appeal of a project.

Most art directors hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree--typically a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts. Common degrees that a future art director may pursue include graphic design, visual communications or digital media. To really stand out as a candidate for an art director position, consider earning a Master's Degree in Business Administration or Fine Arts to advance their careers.

In MFA programs, you refine your artistic skills and improve creative techniques. MFA programs not only prepare you for all types of art careers, such as graphic designers, but also jobs as art directors. These programs also prepare you to teach art courses at colleges. But if you plan to work as an art director, consider taking business classes to supplement your art major.

Most positions as an art director require you to have a minimum of three to five years of experience in a lower-level art-related job. For example, you could work as a graphic designer, copywriter, photographer or other creative within your chosen industry. A great way to get your foot in the door is through an internship at an art gallery.
