What degree do you need to be an attorney?
You need a Juris Doctor degree to be an attorney. In addition to the Juris Doctor degree, aspiring lawyers must write and pass an ethics exam known as the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). The MPRE is a 2-hour, 60-question multiple-choice examination developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
MPRE is offered three times per year and is a prerequisite for the bar exam in all but three jurisdictions (Maryland, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico).
The final step to becoming an attorney is to write and pass the bar exam. This is a very difficult exam, with some states reporting only a 40% pass rate. The bar exam usually consists of multiple choice and essay questions that evaluate their knowledge of state law and their ability to apply the law critically to various fact scenarios.
