What degree do you need to be an ER nurse?

You need either a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) or an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) in order to become an ER nurse. There are some hospitals that do require their nurses to have a BSN or higher, so it may be worthwhile to seek a bachelor's degree, especially if you hope to work in an emergency room.

After obtaining your degree, you will then need to pass a licensing exam. After passing the exam, you must complete additional specialized on-the-job training to prepare you for working in an ER.

ER nurses are specialized nurses that focus on emergency care, so hospitals often offer orientation programs for nurses who want to shift into this specialization.

The emergency room setting requires a lot of skills, especially the ability to rapidly assess and treat. This may not be for everyone, but the knowledge you gain in degree programs will help you to be more fully prepared to be successful as an ER nurse.
