What degree do you need to be an OB/GYN nurse?
You need an ADN or BSN to eventually work as an OB/GYN nurse. In addition to one of the aforementioned degrees, candidates must pass a national test and amass hours of experience in the field.
The path to working as an OB/GYN nurse is varied. You can pursue the two-year Associate's Degree in Nursing or the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. While the four-year degree is preferable, both will prepare you for the required national licensure test.
The NCLEX is the national licensure exam for all candidates aspiring for the RN designation. Passing this exam will allow candidates to then apply for their desired state licenses allowing them to practice nursing.
Once the exam has been passed and the state license has been obtained, aspiring OB/GYN candidates can begin gaining experience in that nursing field.
Some OB/GYN nurses go on to pursue certification. This process requires several years of experience and over 2,000 hours of professional experience before sitting for the certification exam.
