This question is about what a doctor does.

What does a typical day look like for a doctor?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

There is no such thing as a typical day for a doctor; each day is different, especially depending on the type of doctor that you are. A day in the life of a gynecologist looks much different than an endocrinologist or oncologist or even a gastroenterologist. The commonality is working with the patient to diagnose and treat whatever is ailing them.

Doctors deal with an average of 20 patients a day, with each one complaining of different symptoms and concerns. For each patient, the doctor must check the details of the case, try and get a sense of what's going on, and then figure out the medicines-often trying to do this within a half hour.

A general day in the life of a doctor includes starting the day around 8 am or 9 am by performing rounds at the hospital. This involves going to various patients (such as the newborn nursery and pediatric ward), where he/she visits with the patient's family members, takes vitals, and checks the patient's status. The end of the day involves more paperwork, writing prescriptions, and conducting other necessary paperwork, and typically ends around 8 or 9 pm in the evening.
