What does a veterinarian wear?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

Veterinarians wear medical scrubs with or without a white lab coat. There are different types of veterinarians based on their type of practice. Some veterinarians work solely in an office-style clinical practice seeing small animals like dogs and cats, while others may be large animal vets working on farms or ranches.

Large animal veterinarians care mainly for animals like pigs, horses, and cows. They need to travel to farms and typically spend a large part of their day in mud and manure. They practice in all types of weather, so their uniforms need to be more practical and warm than someone in an office setting.

Large animal vets may choose to wear standard scrubs, but it is not unusual to see them in:

  • Coveralls

  • Jeans

  • Tee shirts

  • Galoshes or rubber boots

  • Waders or overalls

Large animal vets may have to use large equipment and deal with animals who are more likely to bite or chew on anything loose. To that end, they need to avoid loose clothing, long hair that is not secured, and jewelry that could get tangled.

For veterinarians working in an office or clinical practice setting, the veterinarians typically wear:

  • Medical scrubs

  • White lab jacket

  • Closed-toed shoes (athletic shoes or crocs are the most commonly seen)

  • Collared shirt

  • Slacks

  • Skirts or dresses that are past the knees

Small animal vets need to have hair that is clean and neat. Artificial nails are not recommended as they can make handling animals more difficult. It is a good idea to have multiple lab coats available as they are white and can be soiled easily throughout the day. Soiled jackets should be changed immediately.
