What is a certified professional coder?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

A certified professional coder is a tech professional that has obtained the certified professional coder (CPC) certification. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) offers this certification for individuals pursuing medical coding careers.

The CPC certification is considered an entry-level certification that helps candidates display their expertise for the medical coder position and allows them to possibly earn a higher salary.

Medical coders seeking this certification must pass an exam with a 70% or higher score. The exam is just under six hours long and consists of 150 multiple-choice questions which mostly relate to CPT for medical coding.

Candidates can take the test online or in person, and the AAPC offers candidates many different tools and practice tests to help with preparation. Those who have taken the exam will be notified of their score in one to two weeks.
