What is a professional nurse?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

A professional nurse is a registered nurse. This requires more education and training. Alternatively, you can be a practical nurse, such as a medical assistant. This will require less training and education but will limit your scope of care.

Both professional nurses and practical nurses provide patient care, but professional nurses work under their own licenses, which allows them to do many things that practical nurses cannot, such as perform procedures and administer advanced medications.

Practical nurses are required to work under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor or professional nurse, which limits their functions and abilities. Unlike practical nurses, professional nurses can perform procedures that include starting intravenous medications. They also can administer advanced medications such as chemotherapy.
