What is a typical day for a truck driver?
A typical day for a truck driver consists of driving around 8 to 12 hours a day delivering goods, checking routes, updating paperwork, and dealing with vendors. The day starts off with the truck driver arriving at the truck depot hub to pick up their truck and equipment. The truck is usually inspected to ensure that it has good tires and oil. The address is then verified and put into Google maps or Wave. Then the driver is off driving to their drop-off location.
Once at the delivery location, the driver will usually need to verify the delivery information and contents of what is being delivered. Sometimes the truck driver is responsible for offloading the goods, but other times the company has people who work on the delivery dock who do that.
Depending on the type of driver and delivery, there can be anywhere from 1 to 20 stops such as the class with Amazon truck drivers. Once the driver is finished dropping off their load they then drive back to the truck depot hub to drop off the truck. There is another inspection and the filling out of necessary paperwork.
Another type of trucker, Over The Road (OTR), are truck drivers who haul freight over long distances. In this case, truck drivers may drive around 12 hours a day with a 10-hour break in between shifts. These truck drivers typically sleep at truck spots in their vehicles and shower at the facilities at these locations.
It can be a long hard day working as an OTC driver but you also stand to earn the most money.
