What is an attestation engagement?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

In accounting, an attestation engagement is an arrangement with a client where a third party investigates and then reports on something created by the client. There are three types of attestation engagement reporting, which are examination, review, and agreed-upon procedures that are performed under attestation standards.

The examination engagement is an attestation engagement where the third party obtains reasonable assurance by obtaining sufficient evidence to conclude whether or not the assertion made is fairly stated. This is often based on the opinion of the third party.

A review engagement is an attestation engagement where the third party obtains limited assurance by obtaining sufficient appropriate review evidence. Then, from there, they can say whether or not any material modification should be made,

Agreed-upon procedures engagement is an attestation engagement where the third party performs a procedure on a subject matter to report findings without providing an opinion or a conclusion on it.
