What is the career path for an auditor?
The career path for an auditor includes jobs as a junior auditor, a senior auditor, and an internal audit manager. Before beginning work, auditors need to have completed a bachelor's degree in accounting and hold both a CPA license and a CIA license. Many auditors first work as accountants before transitioning into being auditors.
The first position that many auditors take is a junior auditor position. This is where an auditor starts their career. They need to work a few years to gain experience and then from there, they can move up to a more senior position. A senior auditor takes on more responsibility and is also given more independence. Many auditors stay in that position their entire career.
If a senior auditor is interested in management, they can choose to pursue the path of an internal audit manager. If someone is seeking these upper positions, it could be beneficial to obtain additional certifications, such as certified fraud examiner (CFE) certification or certified information systems auditor (CISA) certification. These can forward a career.
From a management position, many people may stay as an internal audit manager, but it is possible to pursue even further into management and go into a position as a financial director. This often makes it so you do not do auditing, but rather focus on the finance of an entire operation as a whole.
