What is the first step to becoming a truck driver?
The first step to becoming a truck driver is to enroll in a truck driver school. In order to do that, an individual needs to first decide what kind of truck driver he or she would like to be.
There are different types of Certified Driver's License (CDL) depending on the kind of truck. To qualify for a trucking license, an applicant needs to be at least 18-years old with a commercial driver's license, pass their exams, have good vision, and they need to pass a background test.
The 3 types of Certified Driver's License (CDL) classes determine what type of vehicle can be driven (Class A, Class B, and Class C). Each CDL license has its own special requirements and cost. You must be 18-years or older to become a truck driver intrastate and 21-years and older for cross-country trucking.
Class A licenses cover the heaviest of trucks and include, with a gross combination weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, and includes; flatbed, dry vans, a semi, big rig or 18-wheeler, truck trailer combinations - double and triple trailers, and tractor-trailer buses.
Class B licenses cover trucks at moderate to heavy in weight and include; straight trucks, buses, garbage trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks, or cement mixers.
Class C licenses cover smaller vehicles, including delivery trucks, warehouse trucks, large passenger vans for 16 or more passengers.
