This question is about American Ballet Theatre and American Ballet Theatre jobs.
The hiring process at American Ballet Theater is quite extensive and varies based on if you are applying for a corporate position or a company/theater position.
There are three basic steps to the hiring process at The American Ballet Theater:
Application: Prospective employees are encouraged to explore The American Ballet Theater webpage and get information on The American Ballet Theater's business, culture, and available jobs.
Once an opportunity of interest has been identified, prospects are encouraged to apply by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@abt.org. Your email should include the name of the job posting as your subject line.
After you have submitted your application, your cover letter and resume will be reviewed by the internal hiring team. Only applicants that are selected to move forward will be contacted. Do not call the American Ballet Theater as they will not discuss your application over the phone.
Interview: After you submit your application, it will be reviewed by a member of the internal recruitment team. If your skills seem to be a match for the role, you will be contacted to set up a phone interview.
During the phone interview, you will discuss the role in greater detail and get to ask any questions you have regarding the role and/or the company. If you are still interested and the recruitment team feels that you are a good fit, you will move on to the in-person interview.
The in-person interview usually takes place with the head of the department and at least one manager. This interview tends to involve a lot of scenario-based questions in order to gauge your personality and experiences in past roles.
Typical interview questions include:
"What do you know about the American Ballet Theater?"
"What is your favorite ballet or broadway show?"
Offer and Onboarding: If you are selected for the role, a member of the internal recruitment team will contact you to review the offer letter details, benefits, and more information on your new career at The American Ballet Theater. If you are not selected, you will receive communication from a member of the The American Ballet Theater team.
Use the interview to showcase your past experiences and demonstrate that you have the skills to succeed at The American Ballet Theater.
Please note that the American Ballet Theater is a fully-vaccinated company. Any individual who is offered a position with the company must show proof of full vaccination and a booster shot at the time that the position is offered and accepted.
For dance company and supernumerary positions, applicants are required to go through an audition process. There are audition opportunities available for dancers who are putting on their first pair of pointe shoes and those who have been dancing for years.
Audition opportunities include:
ABT JKO School Pre-Primary and Primary
JKO School Levels 1A-3
JKO School Pre-Professional Division
Studio Company
William J. Gillespie School
NYU Master's Degree Program in Ballet Pedagogy
