What is the hiring process at Citigroup?

The hiring process at Citigroup varies by position and usually takes several weeks from start to finish due to the drug testing and background checks that are required.

There are 3 basic steps to the hiring process at Citigroup:

  1. Application: Prospective employees are encouraged to explore the Citigroup careers webpage and get information on Citigroup's business, culture, and available jobs.

    You are also invited to explore the "Why Citi" information located at the bottom of the careers page to get more insight into what it is like to work for Citigroup and its commitment to its people.

    Once an opportunity of interest has been identified, prospects are encouraged to apply via Citigroup's career page. You will be prompted to create an online profile via Workday if you don't already have one. Once you have signed up, you will be able to submit your application.

    After you have submitted your application, you will be able to update your profile, apply for jobs, and monitor your application status using the online portal.

    There may be pre-screening text messages or assessments that will be sent to you or you will be contacted by a member of the internal recruitment team regarding the next steps.

    Please note that a full COVID-19 vaccination may be a condition of employment depending on the role and location of the job. If you have concerns, please discuss this with a member of the internal recruitment team.

  2. Interview: After you submit your application, it will be reviewed by a member of the internal recruitment team. If your skills seem to be a match for the role, you will be contacted to set up a phone interview.

    During the phone interview, you will discuss the role in greater detail and get to ask any questions you have regarding the role and/or the company. If you are still interested and the recruitment team feels that you are a good fit, you will move on to the next interview.

    The next interview usually takes place with the hiring manager and at least one team member who is currently working in the role you have applied for or is at a similar level. This interview tends to involve a lot of scenario-based questions in order to gauge your personality and experiences in past roles.

    You will likely go through at least 3 rounds of interviews depending on the role that you have applied for. This is a rigorous process and they are looking to see if you are patient enough to go through it. So if this is what you really want, stay patient.

    Sample interview questions include:

    • "What are your expectations for this role?"

    • "Describe a time you experienced difficulty in the workplace."

    • "What are your weaknesses?"

    • "What are the 3 most important things happening in the world right now that are affecting the markets?"

    Citigroup offers their tips for successfully interviewing with them including:

    • Take time to connect with people in the industry

    • Read the Wall Street Journal or other financial magazines regularly

    • Focus on a plan of action if you lack a skill for a role

    • Keep your answers succinct

    • Be consistent in your resume (same font, same tone, etc)

    • Remember this is your opportunity to assess the company just as much as it is about them assessing you

  3. Offer and Onboarding: If you are selected for the role, a member of the internal recruitment team will contact you to review the offer letter details, benefits, and more information on your new career at Citigroup. If you are not selected, you will receive communication from a member of the Citigroup team.

    Once you have accepted an offer, you will be asked to complete forms and start the pre-onboarding process. You will also be required to submit for a drug test and background check. The internal recruitment team member will provide you with more detailed information on how to complete these steps.
