What is the hiring process at CNN?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 8, 2022

The hiring process at CNN is standard for the media industry and consists of several interviews before receiving a final decision.

You apply for a job at CNN on their parent company's job website, Warner Media. You can also apply through a third party-career website.

CNN has many different departments you can apply to:

  • Consumer Products

  • Corporate and Administrative

  • Creative, Content, and Editorial

  • Data and Research

  • Early Careers

  • Executive

  • Finance and Accounting

  • Human Resources

  • Legal and Business Affairs

It's important that you have an understanding of CNN's programming, its mission around original content, and its digital properties before applying.

After applying to your specific department and role, you then take an online CNN assessment through HireVue. This is considered an interview, but it is conducted by an automated computer system.

HireVue sends you a series of interview questions you answer via video on your laptop, tablet, or smartphone. You have 30 seconds to prepare, then a set time of 90 seconds to three minutes (depending on the question) to record and submit your answer.

HireVue gives you the chance to answer practice questions before completing the official interview.

The Platform uses a structured interviewing style, which means it issues the same set of questions to each candidate in the same order. Here are some sample questions you are asked in your HireVue interview:

  • Tell me a little about yourself.

  • What are your long-term career plans?

  • What made you leave your previous job?

HireVue then transcribes your answers and issues you a score, which is used to rank you among the other applicants.

If you pass the HireVue assessment, a CNN recruiter reaches out to you to schedule your second interview. You have several interviews with CNN and these can be online or in person.

You are interviewed by Human Resources, various team members, and department heads.

Here are some questions to expect in your CNN interviews:

  • What do you think is the most important news of the last year?

  • Name three things that help grow a media platform.

  • What recent news event have you been following closely and why?

Certain positions, such as writers or on air anchors, require you to present a portfolio of your work during the interviews. For instance, you may go over some of your articles with an interviewer, if you are a writer.

On the other hand, a prospective anchor may watch a demo reel of their previous work with CNN during the interview process.

If you pass the interview phase, CNN conducts a background check on you.

The entire hiring process can take as long as a few weeks or months to complete.
