What is the hiring process at Netflix?

By Zippia Team - Apr. 20, 2022

The hiring process at Netflix is multifaceted and can be arduous, involving multiple phone screenings and up to seven rounds of on-site interviews. For some positions, you may be required to take assessments or complete a take-home project.

Before the initial phone screening, the recruiter will send you a link to the Netflix core values webpage, titled the Cultural Memo. The recruiter will ask questions about Netflix's culture, your past projects, and basic technical knowledge to assess your expertise.

Be prepared for blunt behavioral questions, such as, "What don't you like about Netflix's culture?" or "which part of the Cultural Memo is especially appealing to you?"

This is followed by another phone screening with a hiring manager, and involves open-ended technical questions, and questions specific to the technologies and/or programming languages relevant to the role. If you are interviewing for an engineering or coding position, you will be asked to complete a coding challenge using a shared editor.

You may receive a take-home project that takes up to six to eight hours to complete. An example of a typical project would be having to build a working microservice to calculate and edit the pricing of subscriptions based on rules the company provides. You'll also be required to provide a complete system design document.

If you pass these rounds, you will receive an invitation for an all-day on-site interview. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Netflix conducts this stage remotely, but it is traditionally done in person.

Netflix employees say that 40% to 50% of the Netflix interview is company culture and fit questions, rather than technical skill. Netflix places great importance on its company culture.

The typical on-site interview consists of two parts. The first part comprises four technical interviews (some one-on-one, others two-on-one), followed by a human resources interview.

Technical candidates can expect to do whiteboard challenges and Leetcode problems, and answer questions about data structures and algorithms. Even if you aren't interviewing for a technical role, expect brain teasers such as, "You have a three-gallon jug and five-gallon jug. How do you measure out exactly four gallons?"

The second half of the on-site interview is less technical. You'll speak with two directors. Be prepared to discuss culture fit at every stage of the interview process. The interview experience is intense, and Netflix does not waste any time: if you perform poorly at any stage, the interview usually ends early.

After your on-site interviews, you'll receive a decision within one to two weeks. If you don't receive an offer, you must wait six months to one year to reapply.
